Experts state that death risk of pessimistic people is more than other people.
Pessimists die early! Optimists live more!
Positive and negative expectations from the future give us clues to understand about how people are vulnerable to be caught both physical and mental disorders. According to the scientific studies investigating the relationship between optimism-physical health and optimism-mental health, pessimists spend an uncomfortable life, even they die, whereas optimists live longer.
Clinical Psychologist Doctor and Hypnosis Expert Mehmet Başkak wrote up the consequences of these interesting and thought-provoking research for you:
PESSIMISTS DIE OF HEART ATTACK!
A lot of studies show that compared to pessimism, there is a direct relationship between physical health and optimism. Furthermore, contrary to optimism, it is proven that there is a direct relationship between pessimism and unusually physical health disorders. According to a study conducted on people at later ages (btw. 65-85), it was seen that death risk of people who have optimistic characters was generally lower, especially in cardiovascular diseases. These data were confirmed with a longitudinal study conducted on men between ages between 64 and 84, and the inverse proportionality between cardiovascular health disorders and optimistic temperament was determined.
According to another study conducted for 15 years, death rate of optimistic people from cardiovascular health disorders is lower by 50%.
It was seen that the progression of coronary diseases on optimistic women, compared to pessimistic women, was slower.
OPTIMISM AGAINST CANCER AND AIDS
According to cancer diseases studies, young breast cancer patients who have pessimistic temperaments die earlier. In head and neck cancer cases, during a year since the first diagnosis of the disease, survival rate of optimistic patients is more than pessimistic patients.
An optimistic temperament, less aversive attitude to cope with stressful situations and lower level of depression make positive contribution to the progression of AIDS treatment.
OPTIMISTS HEAL FAST
It is proven that optimistic people have higher quality of life compared to lower optimistic people, and even pessimists. It is stated that, in the presence of serious pathological cases, optimistic patients correspond to stressful situations better, and this affects their quality of life positively.
For example, according to a study conducted on patients who have had by-pass operation, in 6 months following the operation, the quality of life of optimistic patients show increase. On optimistic patients, faster clinical healing was observed and those patients were successful in keeping up with their daily lives. Similar results were observed from the studies conducted on groups of patients who have other pathological disorders.
OPTIMISTS HAVE HIGHER QUALITY OF LIFE
A lot of scientific studies revealed that a good quality of life is important for people to correspond to different situations and to redetermine their goals according to changed situations.
It is possible that avoiding from or minimising the negative psychological and physiological effects of failure to reach a goal (for example: falling sick despite constantly trying to stay healthy). Person can manage this by moving himself/herself away from impossible goals or directing his/her efforts on more reachable goals, kind of self-regulating.
Indeed, moving away from an impossible goal shows a person’s ability to correspond to conditions. By this way, person manages to protect himself/herself from negative consequences of repetitive failure emotionally.
Redetermined goals give meaning to the life and person gets motivated to achieve them again. People who achieved this, compared to the ones who are having difficulty in giving up their impossible goals, have better quality of life and physically more healthy life.
These people are also optimistic about their future because they can cope with difficulties more effectively and can determine new goals in their lives.
There are also unreasonable optimists!
It was observed that unreasonable optimists didn’t see themselves under risk as much as pessimists did. Additionally, they believe that they are able to prevent possible health disorders.
For instance, people smoking and having unreasonable optimism don’t see themselves under risk from smoking disorders as much as other people do. This perception of these optimistic people is interpreted as a kind of unreasonableness or optimistic bias. Even though optimistic smoking people see themselves under risk from pathological disorders originated from smoking compared to other people, they don’t see themselves under risk as much as other smoking people.
Newly-conducted researches showed that smoking people have a lower risk perception compared to non-smoking people. As a corroborative to this knowledge, unreasonably optimistic people smoking (who see risks depending on smoking less than normally) believe that they don’t get caught to lung cancer because of smoking for a few years and getting caught to lung cancer is only related to genetic inclination.
It is also observed that unreasonably optimistic people don’t rely on so much giving up smoking hypothesis to decrease the risk of getting caught to cancer.
As seen in scientific studies, Clinical Psychologist Doctor and Hypnosis Expert Mehmet Başkak states that optimism has a very big effect on coping with the difficulties of daily life and business life, and calls on everybody to be optimist in new year.
I congratulate your new year, and hope it brings you health and happiness.
Have a nice year…
